Qualities of a Candidate

  

"Do I have what it takes?"

The Church seeks men who are able to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ not only in a sermon at church but also by the example of their lives. The priest must be able to give witness to the community of the faithful that he lives the values of the Gospel.

If you think God may be calling you to serve as a priest, consider the way you live your life now as a disciple of Christ. Here is a sample list of qualities we seek in a candidate for the priesthood:

Do I have...

  • a personal relationship with Jesus Christ
  • a regular prayer life, both personal and communal (Mass, devotions)
  • a devotion to the Blessed Sacrament through regular participation in the celebration of the Eucharist
  • an attitude of openness, or docility, to the Holy Spirit
  • a parish community with whom I worship each week
  • a history of serving in my parish, such as serving at Mass, helping at parish events, singing in the choir, teaching Religious Education, or involvement in the Youth Group
  • the ability to relate to a wide variety of people, adults, the elderly, youth and children, clergy, religious, and lay people
  • the ability to stand up for the truth of the Gospel
  • the desire to develop healthy relationships with family & friends
  • the desire to serve God and the Church through a life of service to others, especially those most in need
  • a sense of humor and ability to be self-critical and self-reflective in an honest manner
  • leadership ability and a desire for achievement
  • ability to work cooperatively with others and the ability to collaborate
  • ability to listen to others with compassion
  • ability to take care of my own physical, mental, and spiritual health
